This may be a knife, a piece of glass, a sharpened piece of metal or a machette. This procedure is done without any anesthetic and the girls are told not to cry out as they will not be considered as marriage material. During the procedure there is usually no cleanliness or antiseptic used. Many girls bleed to death from the procedure.
